VTrace conversion guide

How to convert PNG or JPG to SVG for free

A PNG or JPG is a grid of pixels. An SVG can describe the same artwork with shapes and curves, so it stays sharp when enlarged. VTrace traces those shapes locally in your browser and lets you download the result for free.

Start with the clearest source you have

Logos, icons, flat illustrations, and high contrast drawings are good starting points. Use the original image rather than a screenshot of a screenshot. A PNG usually preserves flat edges better than a heavily compressed JPG. If all you have is a JPG, you can still trace it; inspect small letters and edges for compression artifacts.

For a paper drawing, photograph or scan it evenly, crop away the surrounding desk, and keep the lines distinct from the paper. Increasing the file size alone does not recover missing details.

Convert the image in four steps

  1. Open your image. Drop a PNG, JPG, WebP, or BMP into VTrace, choose a file, or paste an image from your clipboard. Files can be up to 20 MB each, with up to ten images in a workspace.
  2. Check the suggested image type. VTrace starts with settings suited to the image. Choose Logo, Illustration, Photo, or Black & white if another type fits better. A photograph becomes stylized artwork rather than a perfect reconstruction.
  3. Compare the preview. Start with Balanced. Choose Simple for fewer shapes or Detailed if important small features are missing. These choices update the preview automatically. Use the comparison slider and zoom to inspect corners, holes, and text.
  4. Download SVG. The SVG contains editable vector paths. Open it in a vector editor if you need to adjust individual nodes, redraw lettering, or prepare a precise print or cutting file.

Transparent PNGs and background removal

A transparent PNG is a useful source for isolated artwork. If the image has a solid or photographic background, compare your result before deciding to remove it. Optional background removal processes the image on your device but first downloads a large model, approximately 183 MB. It can take time on the first use and may remove parts of a logo or drawing.

What conversion cannot recover

Tracing approximates visible edges. It does not identify the original font or reconstruct the designer's original shapes. Tiny text, gradients, soft shadows, and noisy photographs may need manual cleanup. Large source images are resized to at most 2,048 pixels on the longest side to protect browser memory.

Download before refreshing or closing the tab. Your images and edits live in the current tab's memory; VTrace does not keep an online copy.
